I told someone I was going to re-blog this for them. They were asking why certain glasses go with certain beers. Whoever you are, this re-post is for you.

    Jar Definition

My new blog, The City Jar Exchange (CJX) is getting some truly bizarre follower names. Most of them are crass or mildly pornographic. I was trying to hypthothesize the possible meaning of this. Could the word “Jar” possibly have an uncouth slang meaning? I decided to look it up. The Slang Dictionary told me this:

    Jar Definition: Noun, British

    •   A pint of beer. A pub habitués’ term which has been in widespread use since the 1950s. At the turn of the 20th century ale was served in china mugs, known as jars, as well as glasses.
    •   Citation ‘Hey Tom I fancy a bit of lunch. Let’s stop at that pub for a few jars.’ (Roger Mellie, cartoon in Viz comic, 1989)

Sidenote: This citation would imply that Brits don’t eat lunch, they drink it. Awesome.
