Friday Music & Beer Pairing: Work It
It’s at this point in the year when all of our New Year’s resolutions are slipping through our fingers, and spring feels like a cruel joke that keeps slinking further away from us even as the days get longer.
The most common resolution concerns exercise losing weight/eating healthier. Those of us who routinely exercise often arrive at our gym/yoga studio/jogging path in early January to find it clogged with a sea of new faces. Who then disappear 6 weeks later, which would be around now (mostly, anyways).
My resolution was (again) to blog more. At this point, I must say I have been feeling fairly unsuccessful. So this post works to tie my personal resolution with the resolution of the many. I used to do a music and beer pairing every other Friday, and it’s really my favorite subject. When I saw that TAPS magazine was inquiring about people’s favorite music & beer pairing, I felt the urge to reclaim my favorite topic. Also, someone has to write something clever to make up for that pitiful fool who posted on the TAPS facebook page that “Kid Rock & Cold Coors” was his pairing of choice - yikes.
The song of this week is Nicolas Jaar’s revamp of Missy Eliot’s Work It - because it will be a great addition to your work out play list. And after your work out you will drink a beer, naturally - because drinking beer after exercising is good for you - so say the beer scientists. And the best beer to to enhance that post work out glow would be the 2nd collab brew between Rogue & Voodoo Doughnut - Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Banana Ale. And - I know what you are thinking - “But I don’t live near one fo the 12 locations selling that!” Don’t worry - you can order it and have it shipped right to your door. Unless you live in Texas, North Dakota, Utah, Massachusetts or Canada…in which case you will need to get a PO box, or a friend, in a neighbouring state/country to ship it to.
Now - go work it !
This Week’s Music and Beer Pairing: Frenchie Friday
This weeks music pairing brings together my summer obsession, Grimes- performing Genesis - and Jenlain’s Bier de Garde.
Grimes’ real name is Claire Boucher, which sounds French. Also, she lives in Montreal, where they speak French. Jenlain is a French beer (France French) . Also, it is delicious, super crisp and effervescent - which makes it a superb hot weather beer. Try drinking out of a white wine glass if you want to play super fancy.
Bon weekend!
HAPPY LO-FI DAY
Today’s post comes to you via metro north, so I’m focusing on new age fun with a vintage feel! In other news, I’m relocating to Toronto next month, so this Friday’s music and beer pairing gives a nod to both my future home and my current city of Brooklyn.
The song is “Out of Love,” by Mad Ones. Shot in Toronto by Canadian expat and Brooklyn local @MattFinlin, this video has a lovely lo-fi feel and a rough Friday edge.
And the beer is Brooklyn Local 1. That’s because it’s delicious, BK brewed, summery and….vintages well! Vintaging beer is so trendy now, so I should probably make it my new hobby.
Below is a great article on vintaging beers by Food & Wine magazine. It also features our local hero, Garett Oliver. Full link is pasted below, because Tumblr’s crap-app wont let me hyperlink text.

In Honor of The “Holiday”
Just on the heels of Earth day, I have slapped together a Friday beer & music pairing that was just too good to resist. Blue Point’s Rastafa Rye Ale and an entire playlist curated by @thequeenmajesty on her awesome Jamaican vinyl show at @EVRadio. Click here for the playlist, and click here to access the archives and listen to the 4/16 session. TGIF.
Ok, I wanted to try something new. Pairing a beer and song I like to set the tone for the weekend…I’m gonna try to do this every week so I hope ya like it. Today’s beer is a Jai Alai IPA by Cigar City and Big Baby Ghandi. LMK what you think.
Happy Friday!
It’s the first of the month!
And this month is the FIRST meet your taste-bud-guru event @61local. This Wednesday, you can get get your beer and cheese on. Later tastings will include meats, brines, and ice creams. So go cash your checks and purchase your tickets while they’re still hot. Or while you’re still hot…
PS I guarantee it will be as much fun as the party in this video.

I love this kind of stuff.
Cut The Cheese
Beer and cheese, they’re two best buddies like PB&J or zebras & stripes. Point being, in case you forgot to class-up your superbowl party with cheese there’s still time to class up your palate (it probably needs it after all those buffalo wings you ate last night). Here’s a fun tool to help you with beer and cheese tasting at home - just choose your beer and see what it pairs with! The best part - you probably never knew that processed cheese food paired well with so many beers (duh). Thanks Wisconsin Cheese for sharing this often under rated pairing with us!
And what happens when beer and cheese become one? Well, that’s we call cheese washed beer. It’s dank. Want to try it? Well you’re in luck, because there’s still tickets to 61 Local’s beer washed cheese tasting, hosted by Saxelby cheesemongers, this Wednesday Feb 8. You can still get tickets online.
Are the ones who make you delicious dinner. Especially when it’s a beer dinner. Thanks to the butcher and the baker for an amazing lamb braised in six point righteous rye!
Thanksgiving is coming up, and a lot of families with gather for dinner with a fine bottle of wine, or perhaps a bit of eggnog. Maybe you’re going to go home and wonder, “where’s the beer?” You’ve discovered craft beer, but Uncle Joe’s knowledge of beer goes no further than the confines of the Anheuser-Busch factory, and Aunt Maude turns her nose at the mere mention of beer as she sips her glass of merlot. Family gatherings like this are a great opportunity to make believers in beer, break down the stereotypes of craft beer, and introduce people to new aromas and flavors that they never associate with beer.
And let’s get to the real point here: beer is far more friendly to food pairings than wine. With all the different styles - some that lend themselves well to pairings with an endless number of types of cuisine, beer shouldn’t even be optional on the Thanksgiving Dinner table, especially when you consider the wide variety of foods that end up on your plate.
Here are some tips and suggestions for beers to put on your Thanksgiving Dinner table:
