The GuinnessUS Believer Tour is in NYC from May 22-24, and you’re invited for some tasty samples and some fittingly serious illumination. RSVP now!
The Bronx Brewery, makers of one of our favorite local beers, is teaming up with SlantShack Jerky to create a new jerky that’s perfect for pairing with their beer… mainly because it’s actually marinated in the Bronx Pale Ale.
Answer: Wandering Star. If you haven’t yet had a chance to try any of their fantastic beers yet, tonight’s the night! This new brewery out of Pittsfield, MA is taking over the taps at Barcade tonight. They will be featuring all of their beers to date, including two new to NYC brews: thunderbolt IPA and Rude man Barley wine.
2012 is apparently not just the year of the pending apocalypse, but also the pending A-Pork-alypse.
Get Real NY is back with another new festival, and this one is a celebration of pork and beer called aPORKalypse Now! On Saturday, February 25th, loads of meat and booze will be wheeled into The 404 Event Space (404 10th Ave., at 33rd St., Hell’s Kitchen) for the day-long event. 10 “swine-centric” chefs will be given ten organic local whole hogs to prepare 20 different pork dishes. Among the chefs: Matthew Hyman from Alewife Queens, Philippe Roussel of Café d’Alsace, and Antonio Mora from Prime Meats.
It’s official: On Tap at Whole Foods Columbus Circle (10 Columbus Circle, at 59th St., Upper West Side) is now open. The enclosed beer bar is on the north end of the store (from the escalator, it’s off to the right, near the cashier area.
Our first take? Holy crap, we’re in a beer bar in a grocery store! And it’s so well-executed that you kind of lose perspective that you’re in a Whole Foods. The vibe is a bit like a gastropub, with treated wood and shelves full of growlers. The service is a bit like a beer garden, with communal tables and food and beer ordered only at the counter, which doubles as a bar. There’s also portraits of our local brewers on the walls: Shane Welch from Sixpoint, Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn, Kelly Taylor from Kelso of Brooklyn, and Scott Vaccaro from Captain Lawrence
Details on the beer and food, plus a slideshow, after the jump…

Not the first brewery to take a political stance, but a notable political stance to take.

Hello,
My name is Eric Steen, I’m a homebrewer, beer writer, and beer-event organizer based in Colorado. I’m asked by galleries, musuems, and festivals around the country to put together unique beer programs that feature beer as a type of art. I’ve been invited by the internationally renowned Performa Festival to do something in NYC in November. I’ll be creating a type of pop-up pub that serves homebrewed beer to the public, basically a speakeasy bar featuring local homebrewers. If you or any homebrewing are interested in being a part of these, please contact me at ericmsteen@gmail.com. I am collecting a list of interested homebrewers and will send more information shortly.
A little more about me: I have worked with numbers of breweries and homebrewers in Oregon, Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, and Scotland. Some of the project I’ve put together include: the annual Art & Beer, Glasgow Pub Project, Beers Made By Walking, Boulevard Beer Portraits, and others. I’ve worked with organization including the Portland Art Museum, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, and breweries including Boulevard, Laurelwood, Hopworks, Williams Bros, Upright and currently working with Ska, Odell, Oakshire, and many others.
If you or anyone has any questions I’d be happy to tell you more via email about what I do and what I’m planning for NYC.

“Start-up Bronx beer brands capitalize on borough name to bring new brews to bars this summer.”
Do you think Mr. Beekman was going for some alliteration when we wrote that title? And why is he focusing on the borough brand but not the beer? Maybe he doesn’t spend enough time reading his competitors’ publications, or maybe he just doesn’t get the fact that we want know WHEN THE BREWERY IS OPENING ALREADY G-DAMNIT!
Anyways, best of the luck to the group of gentleman and their endeavors to start a Bronx beer scene. I look forward to trying your stuff.
