I love this kind of stuff.
HAPPY NORTH AMERICAN WEEKEND
Today, Canadians will celebrate the day the Queen quietly acquiesced them of the Union Jack, their conversion to the metric system, and the addition of the word “Chimo” to the colloquial verbiage.
On Monday, Americans will get drunk and eat grilled meats. Actually, we will probably do that all weekend. My holiday beer suggestion is Pretty Things American Darling, because DUH it has the world American in the title, and it tastes good.
What are you drinking this weekend?
Beginners’ Luck: Three start-ups took off despite recession - The Boston Globe
A great piece about Boston’s own Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project.
Pretty Things is one of several small start-ups in the Boston area that launched as the economy was tanking and emerged from the downturn 2 1/2 years later as profitable operations. Their success against conventional odds illustrates the tenacity and acumen entrepreneurs need to thrive in adverse times.
Featured in the picture are the co-owners/brewers Dann Paquette and Martha Holley-Paquette.
These two are part of one of my favorite craft beer stories of the past few years.
Here are the beer-related goings-on after work tonight:

Pretty Things: Fem-Ale
Well, it’s not only for girls – it’s also for moustached mouths. But brewer’s Dan and Martha Paquette DIY beverages, and stunning label art - picturing everything from bunnies to babies – are making many a beer drinker happy this summer. Calling beer “pretty” for the first time ever has certainly paid off for these two, as Jack D’or has been cited as a summertime favorite by more than a few. This beer “project” started out as a somewhat modest endeavor based out of Sommerville, where Dan and Martha rent extra tanks from brewers to enact the creative brews. Their kitchen table serves as their art department, where their artwork inspired by their travels together is later affixed to their beverage bottles.
Having met in Britain, I asked the couple to comment on American and British beer culture. Dan’s wisdom: “American beer culture is an apple, British beer culture is a scallion pan cake.” Here’s a snippet of our conversation….I blame the camera man for having perhaps one too many American Darlings (the kind that come in a bottle, that is).
