This weekend visit to Western Mass involved a not-so-rare border run to Chatam Brewing. Did you know, it’s on the beverage trail?
Highlights included sampling the Cassis Porter, and ….sampling all of the other beers. Chatam brewery is actually popping up in a few restaurants around NYC incognito, brewing house beers for restaurants such as the Dive Bars mini chain in Manhattan. With plans to increase the brewery’s capacity 10 fold, we may be seeing Chatam Brewing pouring in other places around NYS and NYC, good news for those of you who couldn’t find it’s present back alley pour-front.
It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these, but no time like the present. Here’s what’s brewing with beer in New York and beyond:
- Blind Tiger Ale House to revamp food menu with daily grilled cheese special, beer-battered pancakes [Eater NY]
- Wall Street Journal visits new Union Square…
In case you needed any other reason to love Spring: if you love beer, you’re going to be very busy this month. May is peppered with literally dozens of beer events (most of which we cover every day in our Happy Hour feature), from festivals to outdoor drinking to exhausting tap takeovers. Here are some highlights from the month ahead, after the jump…
Taproom 307 is one of a healthy handful of craft beer spots opening this spring in the New York area.
Spring is a time of rebirth, and nowhere is that more true than with the craft beer scene in the New York area. Already, two beer hotspots - Bierhaus NYC (712 3rd Ave., at 45th St., Midtown East) and Taproom 307 (307 3rd Ave., at 24th St., Murray Hill) - have opened up shop this spring. But there are quite a few more on the horizon that we’re looking forward to.
The details on the new spots - and projected openings - are after the jump:
[This is undoubtedly one of the wonkiest posts I’ve ever had on here, but if you’re into state politics and beer, you’ll probably enjoy this text-heavy article.]
What happens in this building could change the way you drink beer
So you don’t have to, we’re keeping tabs on some of the bills circulating in the New York State Assembly and Senate this session that could change the way you drink beer. Some have no chance of passing, but it’s good to know who’s after your beer and who’s looking out for you.
THEY’RE COMING FOR YOUR BEER
After the jump, we’ll tell you about some of the more absurd bills roaming around the halls of Albany that could ruin beer drinking for everyone.
Welcome to the Nanosphere
Good things come in small packages, and Chatham Brewing is an exemplary model of this proverb. From 11-2 on Saturdays, you can stop by and fill your growler with some high quality, top fermented, unfiltered brewski and chat with Matt, the proprietor. My advice is to get there at 10:55…as the first customer gets a free sample of all the beers being sold that day. Going on it’s 4th year, this brewery in upstate NY has quietly participated in what is now predicted to be the new trend in the craft beer world - Nano Breweries.
It may seem like blasphemy to native New Yorkers, but “the official beer of the clam” is coming to the city starting later this month. Narragansett Beer, based in Rhode Island but brewed in Rochester, will begin distribution through Union Beer in late January.
Since I am a native of Rhode…
Two years ago, at the Vermont Brewers Festival, I stumbled upon the tent with the longest line at the end of the afternoon session and asked someone in line what the buzz was all about.
“Some French-Canadian brewery,” they said. “Their beer got stuck at the border last night.”
